1856年8月，在德国一个叫尼安德特的峡谷，采石工人在一个峡谷的山洞里发掘了一副人骨架。1864年，爱尔兰一位解剖学家对这些化石研究后认为，化石代表着一个新的人种，他定名为尼安德特人，简称尼人。

大多数人类学家都把尼安德特人列为智人的一个亚种，并称之为“尼安德特智人”。
